Your couch is the one piece of furniture you always rely on for comfort and solace, especially after a long day at work. There’s simply nothing that feels as liberating as knowing that your beloved sofa will always have the load-bearing capacity to support your abrupt descent. However, a glaring stain can quickly undermine that liberating feeling you get as you reconnect with your couch each day after work. Fortunately, Peroni’s Upholstery is here to help! Let’s take a look at some tips for removing stains from furniture upholstery.
First Things First — Read the Cleaning Tag
Look for a small tag on your sofa or couch with letters on it — here’s what to look for and what each letter means in regards to removing stains from your furniture:
- W — Use water and/or water-based cleaners.
- S — Use a solvent-based cleaner.
- WS — Use water and/or solvent-based cleaners.
- X — Use only a vacuum cleaner.
So, before you start dumping cleaning supplies on that stain, make sure you are using products that will actually work, rather than making matters worse!
Bust Out Your Vacuum
Regardless of the letters on that little tag on your sofa, you should always use a vacuum cleaner on the furniture before busting out other cleaning supplies. The suction from a vacuum cleaner will remove any dry, solid debris that might just become stained more deeply if they were to get wet. Ideally, you should have an upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner because they are specifically designed for cleaning couches, sofas, and other furniture pieces with fabric upholstery.
Steam Cleaning a Couch
If your furniture is marked with the letters “W” or “WS,” you might be able to remove the stain with a steam cleaner. However, before you jump into action, review the steamer’s instruction manual to see if it’s okay to use it on your specific type of upholstery fabric. While “W” and “WS” sofas normally aren’t damaged or deteriorated by water, they aren’t always necessarily compatible with heat.
